White Shallow Shores

Located 26kms from the CBD, this quiet seaside suburb was a recreational and holiday destination throughout the later part of the 1800’s and into the mid 1900’s. Aspendale Racecourse was opened in 1891 and the suburb was named after a successful racehorse ‘Aspen’. The racecourse was also used for motor racing, and drew such large crowds that a rail station known as ‘Aspendale Park Race Course’ was opened in 1905.

Scores of holiday houses lined the sand along the shallow beach, and were popular with holiday makers from the inner suburbs. Now most of those holiday houses are gone, and have been replaced by multi-million dollar homes with direct beach access. In the 1960’s and 70’s Aspendale was subdivided for residential purposes and the racecourse removed to make way for baby boomers to build their dream homes.

Today sees a transitional period from the baby boomers to their children, and the homes of the 60’s & 70’s are being extensively renovated or demolished to make way for the younger generation. With a great village atmosphere, parklands & sporting reserves, the soft white shallow shores of Aspendale beach await you.
